It has been a while since I posted a review to the site. I’ve gotten busy with so many other things. I’m going to start trying to update the website a little more regularly with reviews and what not. I’ve been wanting to review these Bower & Wilkins P5 headphones which I’ve had for probably about a year now, take or give.

These are hands down the nicest headphones I own in terms of materials, and build quality. The build quality and materials alone in my opinion are worth the $300 I spent on these headphones. The leather is high quality, and they are all metal with no cheap plastic bits. By far the biggest let down regarding these headphones is the angel hair like pasta cable they come with : ( I really wish the cable on these was thick like the Sony MDR V6 or the Grado Prestige line of headphones. Either way, with that being said, I haven’t broken the cable, and worst case scenario if you do it is replaceable.

These are an on ear headphone and because they have a very supple leather ear pad they really isolate very well for an on the ear headphone. I’ve used these at loud coffee shops, tons of airplane flights, and other noisy places and the isolation is excellent. The headphones do clamp a little tight on the head, and after a few hours my ears do need a break.

How Do They Sound?

I’m not going to lie these headphones are not high fidelity like a pair of Grados. There is not a whole lot of sound-stage, but what do you expect with closed backed headphones?

This doesn’t mean that the sound is not good, it is. I love these headphones for more passive music listening. Sometimes I don’t want to be able to hear every instrument so clearly; believe it or not there are times when I want my music a little more muddled, and when I do these headphones are perfect. When I want to listen to the song, rather than getting caught listening to one instrument (like I do with my Grado 225i) these are perfect. These are a very warm sounding pair of headphones. If I could improve anything slightly, I would like to be able to kick up the bass just a notch.

Should You Buy Them?

If you really want a well built headphone and have the money to spend I would recommend you get them. However, if you want to spend less and want a nice closed back headphone I would still recommend the Sony MDR V6 headphones. The Sony headphones have a little more bass, are more comfortable and cost about $200 less.

Pros

Build quality

Noise isolation

Travel bag

iPod controls on cable

Extra cable

Cons

Fatigue ears

Price

Thin cable

More recently I have been developing an appreciation for on-ear headphones. In the past I would have always opted for an over the ear. With this being said, I decided I would give the Dr. Dre. Beats Solo HD On-Ear Headphones with Control Talk a spin.

Why this new appreciation for on-ear headphones? Well, they are a little more light-weight, more compact, and travel very well. Like me you also may be surprised at just how well a good pair of on-ear headphones can isolate ambient noise.

I’ve reviewed the Beats Studio HD in the past; so for starters why would one possibly prefer the Beat Solo HD over the Beats Studio (for those asking, or interested in comparing the two)?

Beats Solo HD are not noise cancelling (no batteries required), are lighter-weight, more compact, lower priced. These are some good reasons to consider them instead of the Beats Studios.

From the minute I pulled these babies out of the box, I was really in love with the design, the feel, and the compactness of these headphones. They are really beautiful headphones to look at, and touch with the hands & fingers. When you wear them on your head, they look really slick, they are lightweight, and fairly comfortable (I could wear them for a few hours at a time). The headphones also come with inline ipod/iphone controls & mic, which is awesome when you are listening to music, and then may want to switch to talking on the phone (if you have an iphone). For an on-ear headphone the noise isolation was good. All of these features combined make these headphones great for traveling around by foot on the streets, in the subway, airport, etc.

My first impressions regarding the sound from these headphones are that they had nice thumping bass. These headphones sounded great when listening to rap, and R&B. However, after spending a few more nights getting to know these headphones a little better with some of my other music; I realized the mid range of sounds can be somewhat muffled, not as natural, or crisp as I may want at times. You could make out background vocals, but at times were distant, and fuzzy. Overall the sounds quality from the headphones is good (not great, or excellent).

In conclusion, for me buying headphones is like a journey, not a stopping, or ending point. Are there “better” headphones for the money…yes, maybe, and no depending on your taste. I personally own more than a few pairs of headphones, and do find myself at times wanting to buy headphones I know are probably over priced, and under-performing; why? Because I enjoy the experience of trying new things, making comparisons, etc. If you are looking for a good looking, stylish, very functional pair of headphones, which travel well, while having good sound quality, then these may just be the headphones for you. It certainly couldn’t hurt to try them out, and most places except returns within the first 15-30 days (of course check the return policy before buying). If the Beats Solo HDs lasted me a year as much as I use my headphones, they would be worth the money; if I could sell them used after a year, and recoup some of the money, even better.

I’m going to start this review off by saying I’ve never been a huge fan of in ear headphones for a few reasons. First, and foremost I do believe they aren’t the best things to use if you are trying to preserve your hearing, second, they aren’t that comfortable, and lastly I’ve never found a pair that sounded as good as some of my clip on headphones.

The thing I can appreciate about in ear headphones, is they are small, can provide good noise isolation, easy to carry around, lightweight, and don’t look lame on your head, which makes them great for working out, and I workout a lot.

So how did it come that I would do a review of not only a pair of earbuds, but earbuds by Dr. Dre Beats, a brand that I’ve found to be over-priced, and under delivered in the past???

I was the at the gym a few months ago, and I saw a few guys I know using these earbuds, so of course I had to ask how they liked them, they raved about them; then I asked how much they cost, and then I said SAY WHAT??!! I guess I shouldn’t have been surprised, after all we’re talking Dr. Dre Beats; but really for earbuds…earbuds?

My first thought was, I own “real headphones” for half that price that sound awesome. I could never imagine an earbud even coming close to the sound quality of some of my headphones that cost way less; that’s when I knew I had to see what these $140 dollar earbuds were all about.

As usual the earbuds showed up packaged like perfect little candies in a box; if Dr. Dre and Beats know anything it’s packaging, and marketing; after all what celebrity doesn’t use Beats? From the get the earbuds look sleek in design, the tangle free flat cabling is awesome, the assortment of varied sized rubber ear tips are numerous, and supple; I felt like licking, or trying to put them in my mouth more than wanting to put them on my ears. I was impressed as usual when it came to the un-boxing of another Dr. Dre Beats product.

Time to head to the gym with my new earbuds, I’m looking forward to this workout. I had gone through the whole assortment of rubber tips, and found “my” size, so I should be good to go. First thing I noticed, nice isolation, the gym has it’s own music playing, and that can be annoying making me need to turn my music up even louder, not so much with these earbuds.

The earbuds looked great in all 40 mirrors, I was cool again, small on my ears, not getting in the way, the latest fad, I was sporting it, and now I had something else to checkout in the mirrors besides my muscles. The cables didn’t tangle, which sometimes takes me 5 minutes to un-tangle with some of my other headphones, for that I was very thankful.

The sound…the sound was really good, I was impressed, good enough for working out. I didn’t need to crank the volume, the lows & mids were clear, the bass kicking as I expected it should with these Dr. Dre Beats. Overall I have no complaints about the sound from these little things.

For working out, and the gym, these earbuds are great!

Okay, so with all this being said, would I recommend you go out and get a set of these? It’s really hard to say. I definitely wouldn’t come home and trade in a set of my “cans” to listen to music with these in my house, or when I travel, and then again I wouldn’t bring my “cans” to the gym. For me there is a time & place for everything, and I’ve realized when I’m at the gym I don’t need a $100+ dollar pair of earbuds; I’m perfectly happy with my Koss KSC75 clip on earphones. With my Koss, I can sweat on them, if the cable catches on something, and they break, I can replace them for $20 or less. For me personally, I’m going to save my money to buy more full over ear headphones; for me the sweet spot isn’t earbuds when it comes to my music.

If you have the extra money, you want some cool looking earbuds, that perform really well for earbuds, then get yourself a pair of these earbuds. If you workout 5 days a week, use them to travel, etc, and they last you a year, then I think you’ve gotten your money’s worth.

Technical Details:

Engineered to have deep bass for all your favorite rap or rock music

Flat cable remains tangle-free when stored in a pocket or backpack

Noise-isolating eartips in six sizes keep the music in and the surrounding noise out

Wired with Monster cables and designed by Dr. Dre

Protected by a three-year Monster warranty

I’ve seen this mini speaker around for some time now, but I’ve been hesitant to review it. Based on the features of this portable speaker I had a feeling I wouldn’t be that impressed, especially with it being up against some pretty stiff competition. However, because of it’s popularity I needed to add it to my “to do” list of portable ipod speakers to review, and now my review is complete.

Alright so let’s get into the review….

For starters the speaker takes 3 AAA traditional batteries; with a lot of use battery life is decent at best. The bigger problem with battery life is that the power button is so susceptible to being turned accidentally, you’ll probably end up going through 2 to 4 times the amount of batteries you should have. I personally prefer re-chargeable batteries in my travel speakers.

The shape of the speaker is sleek, and compact which makes it a good traveling speaker. This was probably the best feature of this product; especially the fact that it has no sharp corners, comes with a traveling pouch, it can be stashed away quickly, and easily. The speaker also comes in 4 colors, which is nice (black, pink, purple, silver).

The sound quality of the iLuv mini portable speaker is good; the sound is clear, and crisp. Most mini speakers lack bass, and this speaker is no different; however, there are other portable speakers that do have a better bass than this portable ipod speaker.

In conclusion, there are a few other portable speakers in this same size range/category, price range, I would go with before going with the iLuv iSP100 Mini Portable Speaker for MP3 Players and iPod (links below). The iHome IHM60 would be my recommendation to replace this particular portable speaker, but I’ve also included a few others you may be interested in.

If you don’t know much about Grado headphones, they are awesome. The SR60i is their entry level headphone into their Prestige line of headphones. Grado headphones are known for their retro look, and these music headphones definitely have that going on.

Many say that for the money these are the best headphones money can buy; just a quick search on the internet will verify that for you very quickly. For low cost headphones, these headphones definitely deliver in the sound quality department. The sound from these headphones is very clear, crisp, natural sounding with nice instrument separation. I listened to all types of music with these headphones and was more than pleased with the results. Many will say these headphones are great for rock, but I enjoy them just as much when listening to hip-hop, rap, and house music. The bass from these headphones is not going to shake your ears off, but it is precise, and does not bleed over into the other instruments which is nice. Overall the sound from these headphones is excellent.

The build quality of these stereo headphones is not exceptional as far as the headband, mostly bits of metal and plastic. The headband is a metal strip covered with a vinyl covering. The drivers are encased with a plastic shell, and then covered with a foam pad to cover your ears. They are not the most comfortable headphones I’ve ever worn, but I can get a few hours out of them before having to take them off for a break. Adjust-ability is a little limited, and for me the headphones are a little large for my head even at their smallest setting, which leads me to need to use a Beyerdynamic headband pad with them (no big deal).

The ear pads will lay flat, and they these headphones are not huge, but they are still not ideal for traveling. They are an open back headphone, and do leak noise, which people can hear, or will bother people in a quite setting. Also because of the plastic build quality they look as if they could easily break if they got squished inside a back pack, purse of traveling case (luggage). These headphones are more ideally suited for at home use.

I used these headphones amped and without and amp. They worked just fine with my iphone, and sounded great. These headphones have a very low impedance, so you won’t have a problem using them with a lower powered device like an ipod, iphone, mp3 player, or smart phone.

People often ask should I get the Grado SR60i or the Grado SR80i which are a little bit more expensive. The headphones are nearly identical, and are built on the same features. The SR80i utilizes a four conductor connecting cable, the diaphragms are put through what Grado calls a “de-stressing” process in order to increase and open up the sound-stage of these music headphones, to provide increased inner detail, and improve bass performance. If you have the extra money, and it is not a big deal, I would recommend getting the SR80i, but if your budget is limited, or you are stretching your dollars as is, the SR60i are solid set headphones. Many say the sweet spots in the Grado line are the SR60i, and the SR225i, when it comes to price and performance (some say the SR80i & the SR225i). This is obviously debatable, but what I also believe to be a pretty good guideline when it comes to budget vs. performance.

If you are looking for a solid pair of open back headphones the SR60i headphones will not disappoint.

Whether you are getting ready to take a summer trip, or just want good portable speakers for your ipod, iphone, smart phone, or MP3 player, to use around the office, or office I’m going to give you a list of some of my favorite portable speakers.

I do quite a bit of traveling for work, and for fun. I’ve been bringing portable speakers along with me now for some time, and wouldn’t even think of traveling without one now. Portable speakers are great for turning your hotel room into a more enjoyable place to “kick it”, or just while you are getting ready to go out (since many time we don’t spend much time in our hotel rooms).

When I’m not traveling I use my small portable speakers to enhance the listening experience on my laptop while I work. With this being said, having a good set of portable speakers nowadays is practically a must.

In a nutshell, when looking for a good portable speaker, here are a few things I make sure to look for:

Rechargeable batteries, and battery life

Compact size, so it can be easily packed

Sound quality

For a more detailed in depth list take a look at my portable speaker buying guide.

Here are some of my favorite portable speakers:

The iHome IHM60 is an awesome portable speaker, and one of my favorites. It is very small in size, will fit in the palm of your hand. Even with it’s small size, this speaker has awesome sound quality, has crisp & clear lows & mids, and good bass. Comes with a traveling pouch, to keep it protected in transit. Can hookup to many different devices using a 3.5mm jack. This speaker is also priced very well. Check out the full review here:

The X Mini Max II portable speakers, awesome! These speakers come in a stereo pair, that will take your portable listening experience to the next level. Although, there are two speakers, they are very compact and attach to each other through magnets on the bottom of each portable speaker. When attached together they form a little egg shape that will also fit in your had. These speakers also come with a traveling pouch. They have awesome sound, and you can get some really good volume out of these little speakers. The rechargeable battery in these speakers seems to last forever! Check out my full review below:

X Mini Max II (2)

If you’re looking for something that will give you a little bit better audio quality, a little more volume, and a few more features than the previous two selections, then I would go with one of these Altec Lansing models. They are a little larger in size, a little pricier, but are still great for traveling as well. Both of these portable speakers are awesome, have great audio quality, priced very well, include a remote, and much more. Take a look at my full review of each of these at the links below:

Having really liked many of the Altec Lansing portable ipod docking station speakers I wanted to check out the iMT320. For starters the iMT320 is definitely compact, and made for taking on the go, with it’s small size, and fully integrated travel case.

Until I actually got the portable travel speaker in my hands I didn’t realize how compact this model was. Based on it’s size it is definitely ideal for traveling as it will easily fit into a suitcase, under your arm, in a backpack, etc. The soft integrated cover which doubles as a stand for the speaker provides protection from scratches, and won’t get left behind since it is attached to the device.

After taking a good look at the speaker, and setting it up, it was time to listen to some music. Just as other similar Altec Lansing models (IM600, iMT620) this little speaker did not disappoint. Very crisp, clear, and balanced sound from such a small speaker. No hissing at lower volume, or distortion when turning up the volume.

Overall I was pretty impressed with this offering from Altec Lansing. The biggest drawback about this speaker is that it does not have a re-chargeable battery, and when not plugged into the wall needs 4 AA batteries to be operated. This particular model also does not come with a remote.

In my opinion for the price I would go with the Altec Lansing IM600, or the iMT620. For a little more money you would get a re-chargeable battery, and a remote. The iMT320 is a little smaller in size, but these other two models are still very compact, and not much larger in size.

If you like a retro style looking headphone, with excellent audio quality, then you will love the Grado Prestige sr225i headphones.

Let me start by dissecting the headphones construction, and quality. The headphones are mostly plastic with a few metal bits here, and there. The build quality of the earcups, pads, and drivers is decent, where these headphones really lack is in the headband area.

The headband is a thin metal strip covered by a very cheap plastic vinyl covering. The lack of build quality has a direct effect on the adjust-ability, and comfort of these headphones. Let me just say if these headphones did not sound as great as they do, I would not be willing to put up with the discomfort of them. Over time they will become more comfortable, and I’m not sure if that is because they become more comfortable, or you just get more used to the discomfort (that will fix the sizing problem, and help with comfort).

These are an “on the ear” headphone, I can wear them for about 2 hours before really needing to take a break, and letting my ears recover. I have a medium sized head, medium sized ears (hat size 7), fully adjusted at their lowest setting these headphones are still a little large on my head, and pull down on my ears. I will be purchasing a Beyerdynamic headband pad to make the headband hoop smaller, and to provide more comfort.

Where these headphones really excel is in their sound quality! For me these headphones are very natural sounding; the mids & highs are very crisp, clean and clear. The instrument separation is superb, and you can make out the most subtle sounds. The bass from these headphones won’t shake your ears, but it is there, and is very tight & precise. I listen to a lot of music with bass (R&B, rap, hip hop, house), and these don’t disappoint, it is just a different kind of experience, and a cleaner sound. If I really want to feel the bass, I just switch up headphones to a closed back headphone.

These headphones have very low impedance, and work just fine without an amp hooked up to a lower powered device such as an ipod, iphone, mp3 player, or smart phone. I’ve also used them with an amp, and this does help, but is definitely not necessary.

These are an open back headphone, and do leak sound. This may be a problem if you are going to try and use them for traveling, or in a place that is a “quite place.”

I would recommend these to anyone looking for a great open back headphone for around $200. If these are a little out of your price range, but you want something similar check out the Grado sr80i headphones, which are around $100.

Being very satisfied with the Altec Lansing IM600, I wanted to check out the Altec Lansing iMT620 Portable iPod Dock. This is the predecessor model to the IM600, so I was curious to see how it would stack up to the IM600 which I really like.

The iMT620 is also a medium sized portable speaker, slightly smaller than the IM600. The size of this portable speaker makes it very versatile, it can be used inside the house, the office, the garage, or even taken with you on a trip. This speaker is very flat when the handle/kickstand is folded up, and can easily be stored in a suitcase for traveling.

After using both of these units I can’t say one is head & shoulders above the other (they are very similar). I’m sure it was a challenge for Altec Lansing to try, and improve upon the IM600, since it was such a great model. At the moment being that you can get the IM600 for a better price, I would recommend it over the iMT620.

At the same price it would still be a toss up for me:

-The remote is improved with the iMT620, but doesn’t seem to have as much reach.
-I radio reception seems to be better with the iMT620
-I think I prefer the design, look and shape of the IM600

What I really like about this product

Rechargeable battery

Medium size, but very easy to carry around or pack in a bag/suitcase because of it’s flat shape.

Comes with a remote control.

Quality sound and speakers that can be adjusted high or very low – maintains very good quality.

Can be used with ipod, iphone, or any MP3 player using an audio input cable.

FM radio.

Product Description

Clear, digital sound technology delivers thumping bass

Compact and lightweight

Versatile handle also serves as a kickstand

Digital FM radio with a retractable antenna, LCD display and station presets

High-contrast LCD displays track, artist, album and station display

Rechargeable battery for 5 hours of rechargeable freedom

Full-feature remote

Interference-free technology means there’s no need to switch to “Airplane Mode”

Automatically pauses music when a call is received on the iPhone

AUX IN jack connects portable CD, DVD, and MP3 players

From opening the package, and taking a good first look at this speaker I didn’t think I was going to be dissapointed. My first impression was “wow, this thing is pretty sleek.” I was really impressed with the design right out of the box.

It surprises me how many products in this day & age have such poor design, so when I see a product that is designed well, I really appreciate it. The build quality & design of this portable speaker is on par with some of the best that I have seen. The speaker feels quality, has a nice sleek design, black metal speaker grills, and is blacked out in color (which I like). I like that the speaker comes with a travel bag, and a small remote. The travel bag is nothing more than a dust cover, but most portable speakers of this size don’t even come with any sort of cover (a nice touch).

The speaker will charge a docked device while it is plugged in, and also has a rechargeable battery. It should be noted the sound quality is not quite as good while running on the rechargeable battery. The audio quality this device puts out is really good, rich, full, clear & crisp, with about as much bass as you can expect from a speaker of this size (the bass is really good).

This is a very solid speaker, and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a portable speaker of this size, and at this price point. However, I would also recommend checking out the Altec Lansing IM600, which I have also reviewed here.
